Listening and Speaking------Test Anxiety

1. Teaching objectives-教学目标

1.1 Language target

Students are expected to familiarize some key words and expressions in listening part, such as prepare for, relax properly, keep a balance in your life, balance work with rest.

1.2 Ability goals

Enable students to know how to get the general idea from the listening material and how to make a speech on reliving test anxiety.

1.3 Emotion goals

Enable Students to face pressure positively and learn some tips to deal with pressure in our daily learning.

2. Important and difficult teaching points

2.1 teaching important points: how to prepare a speech.

2.2 teaching difficult point: how to encourage students to make a speech publicly without the whole speech draft.

3. Teaching aids: blackboard and chalk, computer.

4. Teaching methods:

Question and answer method

Cooperative learning (group work and pair work)

Task-based language teaching

Teaching Procedures

Step I Lead-in

Ask students about the coming Mid-term examination, introducing the topic, test anxiety. Write down the key words students mention on the backboard.

Q1: When it comes to the coming mid-term examination, what’s your feeling?

Q2: What will you do in preparation for this exam?

Step II Listening

Task1 Listening for general ideas

Teacher’s activity: guide students to read question1-3 and remind them to take notes while listening.

Students’ activity:Listen to the tape for the first time and try to finish the following three questions. Take notes while listening.

Q1Who could the speaker be?

Q2Which heal issue concerns the speaker most?

Q3What did the doctor tell the speaker about?

After that, invite three students to express their answers.

Task2 listening for specific information

Teacher’s activity: play the tape for the second time and guide students complete these sentences.

Students’ activity: listen to the tape and complete the following sentences.

⑴ I never relaxed properly and in the end I became ill. I started to have headaches, I didn’t sleep well, I didn’t feel like eating and I was tired all the time.

⑵ You must balance work with life. You need to have fun. You need to keep in touch with your friends and do some exercise every day.

⑶ So, my advice for you today is to think carefully about your physical and mental health.

Step III Speaking

Prepare a talk that you could give to your classmates who are suffering from the test anxiety.

Think of three or four suggestions that you would give to your classmates.

Work on your own to plan your speech. Make notes only. Do not write out the whole speech. Remember to:

⑴ introduce yourself and the topic of your speech.

⑵ say something about why you want to talk to them about this topic.

⑶ give the students a few suggestions that they will find easy and sensible to follow.

⑷ finish your speech with some words of encouragement.

Give your speech to your partner. Use your note as a reminder. Do not read them to your partner. Listen to your partner’s speech and give it advice on how it would be improved.

Invite one or two students to the front. Show their speech to the whole class. While listening to the speaker, other students are expected to use the following chart to assess the speech. Then invite students to give their evaluation.
