Step 1 lead-in (4 minutes)

T: Good afternoon, class. To begin with our class today, I’d like to show you some pictures. Can you tell me what is happening? (S: It’s a sandstorm.)

T: Right, there is a sandstorm. So have you ever been in a sandstorm? (S: No) No? Or you can talk about what you know about sandstorms.

S: We know Beijing is often attacked by sandstorms............

T: Oh, thank you. Yes, we see sandstorms really make life inconvenient and affect our life greatly. Actually, we are luky to live here without sandstorms. Do you have the same feeling?(S: Yes) Yes, so any other information?

S: Sandstorms destory many things................

T: Oh, it’s really terrible, isn’t it? (S: Yes) Have you seen the news about the Inner Mongolia?

S: Yes, I have. A sandstorm just happened in the Inner Mongolia this month. I saw it on the Internet.

T: Yes, very good. Can you give us more details?

S: Ok. .......

T: thank you for your information.

T: Now, do you want to know more about sandstorms? Let’s move to the text on page 32, read Sandstorms in Asia.Try to find out the information about sandstorms, and then fill in the form according to the text.

Step 3 Drill (4 minutes)

T: Have you finished? Now I’d like you to help me to finish the form. Ok, let’s look at the first one. The main places where sandstorms often happen. Any volunteers?

S: They are Central Asia, North America, Central Africa and Australia.

T: Do you agree with her?(Yes) Yes. Ok, now look at the second one. Why sandstorms have increased in recent years?

S: Because of desertification, climate changes, people’s cutting down trees and digging up grass.

S: Experts advice people not to go out, or to wear a mask when going out.

T:Good. And the last one. Do it together. What can we do to stop sandstorms?

S: We should plant more trees.

T: Well-done.

Step 4 Consolidation (4 minutes)

T: Ok,now there is a task for all of you. Retell the text according to the form. Do not look at your books. Are you ready? Now everyone, speak out.

S: Sandstorms often happen in Central Asia, North America, Central Africa and Australia. In recent years sandstorms have increased because of desertification, climate changes, people’s cutting down trees and digging up grass.

S: Where terrible sandstorms happen, there will be an orange sky, strong winds and a thick, brown-yellow dust, causing traffic moving slowly and making it difficult to see and breathe. Under this situation, weather expert advise people not to go out or to wear a mask when going out. Sandstorms are terrible disaster, we should plant more trees to stop it.

T:Excellent! You have got a good understanding of the text and a good ability of language organising.

Step 5 Discussion (5 minutes)

1. T: From this text, we know sandstorms are terriblly natural disaster. But because of some human activities, the situation is getting worse and sandstorms affect us more offten. And we konw besides sandstorms, there are many other environment problems because of our human activities. Here I want you to work in groups of four and discuss the follwing question:

What can we do to protect the environment?

(Walk around the classroom to see what they are talking about.)

2. T: what’s your group’s opinion?

S: .................

T:Yes, we should plant trees, save water, save and protect natural resouces. Thank you. How about your group?

S: We think it is very important to ..........

T:Yes. Thank you. So there are so many things we should do. Are you clear?

Step 6 Homework (2 minutes)

1. T: Today we’ve had a brief view of sandstorms. They remind us that the environment is deeply in need of protection. So It’s time and our duty to protect our own home. I hope everyone of you can try your best to protect the environment. Will you?(Yes)

2. T: Here comes the homework. Write a composition about environmental protection in at least 80 words. Ok, that’s all for today. See you next week.
