一、教材内容分析
本单元的中心话题是加拿大——李某某等人在加拿大的旅游经历。而“阅读”(Reading)部分是整个单元最重要的知识输入部分。这篇游记,记述了李某某和刘倩去加拿大看望表兄妹的旅途见闻。乘火车横穿加拿大之前,他们的朋友林丹尼向他们介绍了加拿大的概况,包括面积、地貌、城市、人口、生态环境等。一路上,他们看到了加拿大的自然美景和野生动物。她们中途停靠卡尔加里(Calgary),谈到卡尔加里大赛马会(Calgary Stampede)。加拿大地广人稀,多数人住在美加两国边某某。本文还提到了桑某某(Thunder Bay),五大湖(the ?Great Lakes),温哥华(Vancouver),多伦多(Toronto),还介绍了加拿大的淡水资源。
二、学情分析
本课内容属于普通高中课程标准实验教材中必修三第五单元的内容,学生在高一的前半学期接触过类似的游记文章,必修一第三单元的Travel Journal 当中的Journey down the Mekong这篇文章也是篇游记,话题虽然接触过,但是学生还未很好地掌握skim、scan等阅读技巧以及识别key word、确定topic sentence、预测等阅读技能。通过本课的学习让学生进一步掌握初步的阅读策略。

Step 1 Leading-in
First I’d like to introduce one of my classmates, who has always worked and lived abroad. He graduated from Beijing University, and then went abroad for his Doctor’s Degree. After graduation, he didn’t come back to China. He found a job and worked and lived there. I asked why he didn’t come to China? “ He told me he stayed there because of two reasons. On one hand, it is one of the biggest and most beautiful countries in the world. On the other hand , he can earn a lot of money.
T: Now, I’ll ask you: do you want to know which country he is in?
Ss: Yes.
T: I’ll give you some tips, and then you guess, ok?
Ss: OK.
T: It is in the North America.
Ss:The USA
T: No.
T: It is the second largest countries in the world
Ss: Canada.
T: Right. My classmate lives in Vancouver of Canada. This lessen we’ll learn something about Canada.
设计意图:讲述真人真事,激发学生的好奇心及对本节内容的求知欲望,由此导入新课。

设计意图:这部分是一个小测验,看看学生对加拿大这个国家了解多少。采用小测验活动,一来是为了激起学生学习的兴趣,另一目的是让学生联系自己已有知识,为下面学习做准备,温故而知新。
Step 3 Reading
Task1: Skimming
Have the students skim the passage and then answer the following two questions.
Q1: What’s the passage mainly about?
It is about a trip of two girls, and it tells us some information about Canada.
Q2: What’s ” the True North”?
It’s the name of the train which crosses Canada from west to east.
设计意图:让学生快速浏览全文,掌握短文主旨大意,并在阅读过程中能够准确找到和问题相关的内容。旨在训练学生获取有效信息的阅读能力。

Read the passage and then answer the following questions in complete sentences.

Because they want to watch and enjoy Canada’s beautiful scenery from west to east by train.

设计意图:旨在训练学生对短文的整体理解以及运用完整句子回答问题的能力。
Step 4: Discussion (In groups)
Discuss in groups the following question. After3 minutes, one student from the group will give a speech.
